On June 13, the “3rd Sodium Ion Battery Industry Chain and Standard Development Forum” hosted by China Electronics Standardization Institute and Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance and co-organized by Shanxi Huayang Group New Energy Co., Ltd. opened in Yangquan, Shanxi. The forum invited more than 500 leaders, academicians, experts and representatives of companies related to the battery industry chain from government departments and scientific research institutions.

Jin Lei, director of the Basic Department of the Electronic Information Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that China’s new energy development has a good foundation, and China’s “new three” represented by “new energy vehicles, lithium batteries and photovoltaic products” are internationally leading. In the next step, the Electronic Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will thoroughly implement the decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee and continue to promote the high-quality development of the sodium ion battery industry in conjunction with relevant parties. Strengthen the overall planning of the industry, implement special policies, clarify the goals, key tasks and guarantee measures of industrial development; optimize the product innovation ecology, accelerate the transformation of innovative achievements, and promote industry-university-research-use; strengthen the construction of the standard system and accelerate the formulation of international standards; promote market expansion and application, actively guide the layout of production capacity, and coordinate the sustainable development of the sodium battery industry.

Yu Zhenhua, deputy director and secretary-general of the Energy Storage Committee of the China Energy Research Society and executive vice president of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, said that sodium-ion batteries have shown strong development momentum this year. According to incomplete statistics, more than 20 sodium-ion power projects will be signed, filed, and started in 2024, involving many sub-sectors such as battery cells, positive and negative electrode materials, with a total project investment of nearly 40 billion yuan. As of this forum, a total of four batches of 47 models of sodium-ion batteries have passed the basic battery performance evaluation organized by the forum. In the future, with the development of the energy storage industry, sodium electricity is expected to achieve more landing applications in energy storage.

He Penglin, deputy director of the Safety Technology Research Center of the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, said that in recent years, in the face of lithium resource shortages, price increases, and a surge in energy storage demand, the industrialization process of new batteries represented by sodium-ion batteries has accelerated significantly. In the next step, the Electronic Standards Institute will continue to promote the formulation of national standards and industry standards related to sodium-ion batteries, and through the guidance and support of standards, meet the needs of industrial development, promote technological innovation, improve product quality, and help the high-quality development of the sodium-ion battery industry.

Li Jinghong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University, pointed out in his keynote report that sodium-ion hybrid capacitors have high power density, long life and considerable energy density. In the future, they can replace lead-acid batteries and fill the performance space of supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. The development of low-cost, high-safety sodium-ion hybrid capacitors has greater development potential in the field of large-scale energy storage. At the same time, sodium-ion hybrid capacitors still face industrialization challenges and still need to overcome a series of phased problems in market applications.

He Kebin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, dean of the Tsinghua University Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, and professor of the School of Environment, pointed out that accelerating the construction of an organized carbon footprint accounting system for Chinese localized products will further promote the pace of green transformation in my country’s industry, and take the initiative in the new global development pattern in the future. The release of the lithium battery carbon footprint accounting system will accelerate the development of green, low-carbon and circular development of the entire lithium battery industry chain in my country, and is of strategic significance for the international mutual recognition of carbon footprint data.

Under the chairmanship of Tang Liang, deputy secretary-general of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, the forum also released the “Lithium Battery Carbon Footprint Accounting System” and the “China Sodium Ion Battery Industry Technology Roadmap”, and held the “National Fourth Batch of Sodium Ion Battery Evaluation List” and “National First Batch of Sodium Ion Battery Cycle Life Evaluation Participating Units” certification ceremony.

It is understood that the “National Fourth Batch of Sodium Ion Battery Evaluation List” includes: Shenzhen Weifang Energy Technology Co., Ltd., HENAN CNS ENERGY TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD, Huizhou Liwei New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Easy Sodium Electric Technology (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., Shandong Sacred Sun Power Co., Ltd., Fujian Mengshi New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Dongjian Photoelectric Storage (Yancheng) Technology Co., Ltd., Fujian Shiji Huana New Energy Technology Group Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Youteli Energy Co., Ltd., and Nakun Carbon Source (Tianjin) Technology Co., Ltd.

The “National First Batch of Sodium Ion Battery Cycle Life Evaluation Units” include: Shanxi Huana Xinneng Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Weifang Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai Hanxing Technology Co., Ltd., Veken Technology Co., Ltd., Mianyang Chuangming Intelligent Battery Co., Ltd., and Jiangsu Chuanyi Sodium Electric Technology Co., Ltd.

Li Shujun, general manager of Beijing Zhongke Haina Technology Co., Ltd., and Wang Kechen, president of Huayang Group Industrial Technology Research Institute and deputy general manager of Shanxi Huayang Group New Energy Co., Ltd., delivered keynote speeches at the forum, sharing the latest technologies and industrial development trends.

This forum has set up an opening ceremony, a sodium-ion battery industry chain sub-forum, a sodium-ion battery application sub-forum, a sodium-ion battery standard seminar, a new energy storage power station development and operation seminar, and a sodium-ion battery production line and energy storage project inspection. The 2024 Annual Meeting of the Lithium-ion Battery and Similar Product Standard Working Group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was held the day before the opening ceremony.

Industry insiders said that this forum is an important meeting centered on the development and implementation of the sodium-ion battery industry chain. The convening of the forum will promote exchanges and cooperation within and outside the industry, promote the technological innovation and industrialization process of sodium-ion batteries, and further promote the development of my country’s new energy industry. The forum will guide the future development of the sodium-ion battery industry and promote the green and sustainable development of my country’s energy field.
